Excerpt from Crit Happens Zine #2 Pirates and the Seas PWYW
In Ghosts of Saltmarsh, there is a book called Grog Hovels that contains a list of possible hideaways for pirates. I have taken up the mantle to fill that book. Here are 12 possible places your PC’s can find a mead, a meal and a mission.
The Crow (Chaotic)
Dark. Has cannons built into the sides of the front door like arrow slits, in case of trouble. Crows perched all over the building.
The Salty Siren (Neutral)
Perched on an ocean cliff or at the base of some rocks on the shores. Possible spell drawing patrons in.
The Bloody Buccaneer (Chaotic)
Pit fighting. Eel swallowing. Aquariums around the tavern. Has a shark pool inside the bar and the challenge is to walk the plank and not be eaten.
Keelhaul & Keg (Chaotic)
Feats of strength. Cannonball throwing. Rope swinging between balconies.
The Misfit's Mast (Chaotic)
A place for crew, no captains allowed.
The Uncharted (Neutral)
Almost impossible to find. Tavern moves around. Possibly on a barge in the sea.
The Howling Kraken (Lawful)
The law will be observed. Tavern laws are on wall. Break them at your own risk. Also, Octopus wrestling.
Cutpurse Carls (Chaotic)
Owned by the Thieves Guild. Keep an eye on your gold.
The Rusty Cutlass (Neutral)
Swords all over the walls. Feel free to grab one if a fight breaks out.
Bilgewater Brew (Lawful)
Kind of like Cheers but for Pirates.
The X Spot (Neutral)
Most well known tavern due to great marketing. X’s everywhere.
The Seven Seas Shanty (Lawful)
A trading and swap meet for Pirates.
The Hook and Crook (Chaotic)
An establishment for Captains only.
Rum Runners (Chaotic)
Rum, rum and more rum. AA also meets here.
One Eyed Willies (Neutral)
The ghost of Willie show up, occasionally to tend bar and tell stories of the afterlife.
The Broken Accordion (Lawful)
All music instruments must be left at the door and bards are closely watched.
Patch’s Place (Lawful)
You must look like and talk like a pirate. Tradition must be upheld.
The Plunder and Powder (Chaotic)
Pure chaos. No matter what your players are looking for, they will find it here.
Macaws (Chaotic)
Parrots everywhere. On the bar, purches, in cages. It’s extremely noisy. Your PCs may come here looking for a talking parrot that knows where it’s owner buried the treasure.
Shainties Karaoke Bar (Neutral)
No stress. Just drinking and singing. You could make it mandatory or else you offend the owner.
