Do you see yourself in this picture? The DM point of view? the student’s point of view? Does it take you back to a simpler time where your wildest fantasies came true? It does for me.
I started playing dnd when I was 13-14 years old. I can remember my friend Chris inviting me over to play. His older brother DM’d for us.I played a fighter and thif cut my bag open and all my money drained away as I walked.
When asked, ‘What do you want to do?” I said,
“I go back and pick up every coin that fell out” and I did just that.
Not a high epic fantasy moment but it's the one I remember.
I wasn't excited about the mechanics or even the monsters, I was most excited about the friends I got to play with.
I met Chris’s friend, John, who lived across the street and he played too. He eventually became our DM and stayed our DM for several years.
I took the picture above at our monthly gaming group at the public library. We meet once a month to run games for new people to the hobby or regulars involved in a campaign.
We had a new kid named “Nick” show up. he wanted to play 5e we did not have enough players. I introduced him to this group, who has been playing for about 30 minutes, and one of the young people, I think it was the DM’s daughter, said, to the new Nick, “Welcome to our party”
This, this why I think we, humans, play the game. We want to believe and know there’s a seat for us on the adventure. We want to hear,
“Welcome to the party”
“Your skills are needed”
“You’re valuable to our quest”
I didn’t care that I didn’t get to run a game that day because I knew gaming was in good hands with the next generation of gamers.
You’re welcome at my table anytime. Check out my Game Master page here for how to book a game of your own and feel like you felt the first time you played.
