Looking at a giant hex map is a sure fire way for my anxiety to get inflamed. The biggest question I ask myself is “Am I doing this right?”
I found a solution to quiet the noises in my head, the humble hex flower.
I found out about hex flowers from @GoblinsHenchman on Youtube.
I like the idea of a hex flower because it narrows my focus. In The Hexing, the setting I’m developing and feature in the newest issue of Crit Happens, each flower is a Terror-Tory and I don’t have to worry about filling a whole map, just one hex at a time.
In The Hexing, I’m using the center of the flower to determine who is in power over this Terror-Tory, but that can always change. In this Terror-Tory, the Dominating Power is The Spirit World (ghosts, spirits, banshees, etc.)
Once I have established the Dominating Power over the hex flower. I get to work on each individual hex. Hexes have 6 points, which is perfect for narrowing my focus.
I use the random d12 Dominating Forces table I created to see what 6 nasties will be present inside a 6 mile hex. I also roll on my d12 Encounter Locations table to see which 6 locations my players can go adventuring. In the end it will look like this.
For clarification, there is only one Dominating Power central to a Hex Flower. Each hex in the flower also has a Dominant Power but may not be the same as the Dominant Power of the Hex Flower.
I’m enjoying this simple method of hex crawl creation because it keeps me focused and on track. This is not me telling you how to run your hext crawl, you do you, it’s your table, but if you want to use this method, have at it.
