I teach DnD to new players once a month. As part of our session, I teach them to roll up their characters vs handing them a pre-generated character.
I know, so archaic with all the digital tools we have these days, but when Skynet takes over and characters start coming to life and hunting us down, you’ll be glad you know how to make characters with pencil and paper as God intended.
Helping 5 people create characters with one Players Handbook is chaos and I don’t do chaos, so I turned chaos into process. I created my own flash cards.
I created several copies of both race and classes and each card has only the necessary information. If a player wants to dig deeper, then they can look at the Players Handbook.
I passed out the cards and each player chose the race and class they wanted and then I guided them through the process of putting the information on their sheets.
Other than one player stealing four of the game stores d6’s, forcing me to buy dice I had no need for, everything went great.
I believe, regardless of system, flash cards could be a great help to quicker character creation.
What kind of tools, if any, do you use in character creation to make the process quicker and smoother?
