Creating RPG Goals That Make Sense in 2024
Getting new games to the table without being overwhelmed
Screw January, you can make goals any time you want, just don’t be me in 2023 when I thought I could run 19 different games in a year. What was I thinking?
To make sure this never happens again, I have created a strategy that will help me reach my goals in 2024 and I share which games are on my list for this year at the end of this article.
Whether you’re a DM trying to get your group to play new games or you just want to taste some new games and learn their mechanics, take what you want from my strategy and make them your own.
Let’s begin.
1. Defining Your New Games Scope
Number of games: Set a realistic target, like trying 2-4 new games over the year. Adjust based on your schedule and desired depth of experience.
Types of games: Do you want to explore different genres, mechanics, or one-shots? Deciding this helps focus your search.
Commitment level: Consider if you want short one-shots, longer campaigns, or something in between.
2. Research and choose your games
Lean on trusted sources: Ask your player group, check out reviews, browse online communities for recommendations.
Start with low-barrier-to-entry: One-shots with free rules or beginner-friendly systems are great jumping-off points.
Variety is key: Mix in different genres and mechanics to keep things fresh.
3. Plan your sessions
Schedule dedicated one-shots: Block out specific dates for trying new games, avoiding clashes with your regular campaign.
Short sessions are your friend: Aim for 2-3 hour sessions initially to manage time and avoid burnout.
Prepare minimally: Don't over-prep! Focus on understanding core mechanics and basic worldbuilding. Let improvisation be your friend.
4. Manage expectations
Accept imperfections: Embrace the learning process and don't expect your first time with a new game to be perfect.
Focus on fun over mastery: Remember, it's about enjoying new experiences with your players, not mastering every system.
Be flexible: Sometimes games won't click. Be open to moving on if it's not working, without feeling obligated to finish.
5. Reflect and refine
After each session, take notes: What worked well? What could be improved next time?
Track your progress: Did you achieve your goals? Adjust your targets for the remaining year as needed.
Share your experiences: Talk to your group about the new games you've tried. Their feedback and shared excitement can fuel your journey.
Bonus tips:
Join online communities or forums: Connect with other DMs who are also trying new games, share experiences, and get advice.
Participate in game jams or online conventions: These events often offer short sessions of diverse games, perfect for quick tastings.
Don't be afraid to say no: It's okay to politely decline if a new game doesn't fit your current schedule or interests.
Here are the games currently on my list for 2024
Remember, the key is to make trying new games a fun and enriching experience, not a stressful chore. Set achievable goals, embrace the learning process, and prioritize your enjoyment as a DM. Enjoy exploring new worlds and stories with your players!
Game on!
